Landgraaf, Netherlands (November 27, 2012) – Canadian Tyler Mosher earned two silver medals in the sling-shot snowboardcross event at para snowboarding’s competitive debut here last week.

Last May the International Paralympic Committee announced that para-snowboarding had earned a berth alongside para-skiing in the 2014 Sochi Paralymics. With 30 riders from ten countries competing, the Landgraaf event, which took place at an indoor snowfield, represented a milestone for the nascent discipline.

Whistler, B.C.’s Mosher, an incomplete paraplegic with 40 per cent paralysis below the waist, was second to Carl Murphy of New Zealand in the lower limb men’s class on both days of the two-day competition. Merjn Koek of the Netherlands and Byron Raudbenheimer of New Zealand both took home bronze medals.
Canadian coach Candice Drouin noted, “The course was very technical with features that came up on the riders very quickly, which made for exciting and fast paced racing.”

Mosher said he was happy that his result showed the hard work he did this summer to improve the strength in the muscles that are not impaired.

The FIS Snowboard World Cup circuit picks up next week with a snowboardcross event in Montafon, Austria on January 7.

The next major IPC para snowboard event is a NorAm event in Tahoe, CA on January. 26.
